CHARLES LUCIMA
Principal, LUCIMA STUDIO
Professor, New York Film Academy, School of Photography at Universal Studios

Education: MBA, MA Psychology Claremont Graduate University, BA Economics Claremont McKenna College.
Previous Work: Financial Analyst and Royalties Software Consultant.

When I quit my consulting position at the software company, I was a crossroads in my life. Would I “take my place” in an established family business? Or would I return to the corporate world?

In a strange twist of fate, I chose neither. Instead, I rekindled my love for drawing (in the form of retouching) through Photoshop and a Wacom tablet. Combined with my lifelong fascination of photography, I embarked on a journey through the world of fashion photography and started LUCIMA STUDIO.

Less than 3 years later, LUCIMA STUDIO is a profitable business that gives me the opportunity to explore fashion, photography, and artistry in ways I’ve never imagined. I shoot fashion campaigns for apparel companies and my images have appeared in publications such as Teen Vogue and Seventeen Magazine. I work with modeling agencies such as NEXT, FORD, and Wilhelmina. But the best part is that I get to create art with amazing designers, wardrobe stylists, makeup artists, hair stylists and models.

I’ve found joy in being an educator as well. Through LUCIMA STUDIO I’ve taught local and destination workshops, even hosting a workshop that donated all profits to The American Red Cross for Japan Tsunami/Earthquake Relief.  I also accepted a teaching position for the Photography School (MFA) at the New York Film Academy (Universal Studios).

While it’s not immediately obvious, my corporate background and higher-level education has prepared me for the challenges of fashion photography. In brokering financial deals and working with clients of high visibility, I learned that preparation (pre-production) was the key to smooth transactions (production). In addition, studying Economics and Business provided me not only with insights to overcoming entrepreneurial challenges, but also an understanding of the “macroeconomics” behind the fashion world. This unique perspective allows me to better understand the interest of my clients so I can deliver a better final product.

But at the end of the day, what keeps me passionate about fashion, business, photography and retouching is simply that I constantly create new art. I am still amazed that my work allows me to explore the various aspects of these industries. I am grateful to everyone that I’ve worked with throughout this journey and I am looking forward to bigger and better things to come!

Oh and the profile picture reminds me not to take myself too seriously!
